Perfume intensity: perfume extract, eau de toilette or eau de parfum?

The intensity of a perfume is often referred to as sillage or projection. Sillage describes the richness and depth of the fragrance, while projection refers to how far the scent travels in a room or if it stays closer to the skin. A perfume with strong sillage and pronounced projection indicates a highly intense fragrance.

Perfume, eau de parfum, or eau de toilette? The difference lies in the concentration of fragrance oils. Generally, the higher the concentration, the more intense and long-lasting the scent. However, keep in mind that the quality of ingredients and other factors also impact the intensity and longevity of a perfume. A high-quality branded fragrance with a lower concentration may last longer than a cheaper perfume with a higher concentration. Here's a breakdown of general perfume concentrations:

Perfume or extract is the most intense fragrance you can buy. The percentage of fragrance is 20-40%. The projection is very room-filling and the durability is very high (8 to 24 hours).

EDP or Eau de Parfum has a fragrance content of 15-20%. The projection ranges from strong to medium and it lasts for around 4 to 8 hours.

EDT or Eau de Toilette has a fragrance content of 10-15%. The projection is low to medium and it lasts for around 2 to 4 hours.

EDC or Eau de Cologne has a fragrance content of 3-10%. The projection is low and the shelf life is around 1 to 2 hours.
